I recently bought the nikon SB-600 hot shoe flash. Is there any way that i can used the SB as a remote flash unit while using my cameras built in pop up flash as the master flash?

I have a Nikon D5000 and is trying to figure out how to make the off camera flash possible using SB600 or SB900. I know using SU-800 commander is for sure give me control, but will there be other options such as using sync cord or is there any build-in function on SB900 (or SB600) to get off-camera remote function? I know D300 or D700 has command mode, but it’s not in D5000. is using SU800 be my only option?
I do have a D300 and D100 as well, I just refer to the off camera issue for D5000, cause I get different answers from photo store and online info. actually, they not talk about the combination of D5000 and SB900 much. but thanks for your input anyway.
on page 199 Nikon D5000 manual, it even check the SB900 and SB600 under the Remote column, so it’s kind of confusing making me believe SB-600/800/900 can get remote mode without the use of SU800. and on the same page, remark #2 said “controlled remotely using optional SB-900, SB800 or SU800…” it said “or”, so again make me think it can be done without the use of SU800.
